After The Storm – Progress Shots

After The Storm – Progress Shots

Last December (2010) I posted some shots of a deceased Shearwater (Puffinus Tenuirostris) taken at my local beach after a huge storm. Since I took these shots, I’ve been gradually working on a series of sketches and eventual painting based on the photographs I took that day. You can see my original post here. After about six months of studying the images and making sketches, I began work on the painting which is to be the final installment of this work in progress.  As someone with a background in sculpture and installation, my approach to this work was intuitive, learning the medium as I went, playing and experimenting with the paints as I would with any other project. It’s taken about two months and I’ve finally completed my work. The canvass measures 915mm x 1820mm and I worked with acrylic paints as my...
Play With Me – a work in progress

Play With Me – a work in progress

Ok folks, it’s been a while so I figured I’d give you a sneak peak at what’s been keeping me indoors lately (apart from Uni work). Play With Me is a work in progress exploring the sense of touch. The work will consist of a series of these skeletons, however the process of making them is labor intensive and at times frustrating. I’m learning how to work with old materials on a new surface, and as I go on the work has begun to evolve a personality of it’s own. I’m very interested to see how it will eventually take form, but for now, here are some work-in-progress shots....
Work in progress: Bird

Work in progress: Bird

Recently I walked down to my local beach after a huge thunderstorm to find the beach awash with deceased birds and sea life. There was something grotesquely beautiful about the frail carcasses of these birds that were literally gutted from the force of the storm. The spectacle of twenty sea birds violently thrown up onto the beach half buried in sand and storm debris seemed to reflect my current obsession with death and the body. The works shown here are a study of the two photographs I took that day. Drawn in pastel on A4 drawing...
In Loving Memory

In Loving Memory

Here are the on site images of myself installing In Loving Memory. Overall the day went well, with overwhelming  encouragement form passers by. The experience was almost as rewarding as the making of the work.  Special thanks to my photographer, David McVay (Davidmcvay.net). Who was crucial in the finalisation of this project. Couldn’t have done it without...
Sneak Peak at Grad Show Project

Sneak Peak at Grad Show Project

Here is a sneak peak of my current project “In Loving Memory” for the COFA Annual. The work is  a site specific installation consisting of hand knitted cozies made to fit 16 of the headstones in a Sydney cemetery. This work comments on the loss of the Death Ritual in contemporary western culture. Similar to the way that we clothe our dead before burial or cremation, I clothe the headstones giving each its own unique personality and bringing colour into an otherwise colourless space. Each is made to fit, with colours and textures specific to the age, sex and date of death of the deceased.  More images to come after the COFA...
