Making Alternate Identities with Qwux

Here are a few work-in-progress shots of some masks I’m building with artist/graphic designer extraordinaire Qwux for a wearable artwork. These bad boys are based on his “extra eyes” works that can be found on his website. Stay tuned for more process pics and info on leather making! Here is a dog.

The leather is then cut to the template and soaked in warm water until thoroughly wet.

Keeping the leather pinched on the back-side means that we can achieve a wrinkled look.

Keeping the damp leather pinched on the back-side during the drying process means that we can achieve a wrinkled look.

Gradually drying as the leather is shaped helps to achieve more control over the design and makes fixing mistakes easy!

At this stage the leather is still semi-malleable.

At this stage I’ve been using a heat gun (or a hair dryer) to hand dry and form the leather while it’s still semi-malleable.

 

Now the leather is ready for the finishing aesthetic touches.

Puppy will be given a nose, something special for the eyes (you’ll have to stay tuned to find out what!) and a pretty coat of paint.
