So I’ve been hitting up the Graduation Shows at NAS, COFA and SCA with friends and fellow art workers to have a look at what the current students/future artists are doing of late. Each show was very different with defining features that come with each School. This post focuses mainly on National Art School. As a COFA (College of Fine Arts) student I was keen to explore the space as it has such interesting heritage and history. Though the buildings all look very similar from the outside, the spaces within are huge, lending to the works inside. It was really nice to see that works weren’t crowded in together, leaving them room to breathe and inhabit. The show felt like an exhibition, not a production line of clashing works piled into a space to maximise on pieces viewed at a time. Unfortunately I can’t say the same for the COFA Grad Show. But you’ll read my rant on that in a future post. As I was only able to make it on the the last day the studios were closed, so there were fewer works on show. Here are some shots of the works we saw that day. Also, a special thanks goes out to the lovely Joshua Philpott for being my photographer for the day. Curated by Maz Dixon and Celine Roberts. Show dates: Oct 28th – Nov 17th Join us for drinks with the artists on Oct 28th from 6:30pm at galleryeight, 12 Argyle Place, Millers Point, Sydney, 2000. Affinity is a show about intimacy in all its forms and incarnations involving relationships with the self, the other, places or objects, the physical and the emotional. Artists have called into question the notion of closeness through a wide range of practices and mediums. Loneliness, sexuality, the home, touch and emotional vulnerability are all themes explored by the artists involved. The works beg the question – what is the consequence of bringing such a private concept into a public space? By exposing the concept of intimacy, Affinity invites the audience to enter a private space collectively, sharing their experience of the works together, as companions, provoking the opportunity to touch, feel and interact with the works and each other on a level rarely experienced in the gallery space. Artists: Amanda Humphries Amy Gardner Becky Gibson Celine Roberts Danielle Tam Isabella Andronos Jessica Tse Kath Fries Mandy Schöne-Salter Maz Dixon Yvette Marie...
