Coming to galleryeight this FRIDAY the 1st of APRIL is a group exhibition entitled Fabrication. Fabrication is an exhibition consisting of eleven Sydney based artists from multidisciplinary practices, each exploring our perception of reality, the fabricated truth and our love of “The Hoax”.
Hoax: deception: an act intended to trick people into believing something is real when it is not.
– something intended to deceive or defraud.
Throughout Australian culture there has been a tradition of deception and practical jokes. To coincide with April Fools Day, galleryeight is proud to present Fabrication. galleryeight is located at 12 Argyle Place, Millers Point, Sydney, 2000. The show runs until the 21st of APRIL.
The work pictured here is titled His and Hers.
His and Hers explores the relationship between sexuality, identity and the body. The work deconstructs our preconceptions concerning our outermost skin down to our innermost bones. Through the obsessive embroidering of nylon hair, I represent the parts of the body shared by both sexes that have anatomical or social implications of gender or identity. The anatomy is skewed and distorted by the embroidered hair, causing a blurring of the image, referring to the truth of these “body preconceptions” and how we identify with our own gender and that of the people around us.
